Bridging the Disconnect with Design

Look 喜喜 by and 玩: Traditional Chinese Games by Cheong Jia Qi

Old is gold, or so it seems, for this year’s visual communication graduates of the School of Arts, Design and Media (ADM) in the Nanyang Technological University. Most of their final-year projects on display at the ADM Grad Show 2010 were the re-packing of old traditions and cultures in new visual forms. Some of the subjects “re-designed” included Hakka culture, traditional Chinese games, Chinese wedding customs, Kimonos, the Chinese peony and Feng Shui.

This popular choice amongst our young local designers of mining heritage for design seems to reflect a certain disconnect between our youth and the old in Singapore. The traditions and customs of yesteryear are seen as strange and inaccessible to today’s youth, and the response of these curious young designers is to redesign them. This is also a strategy employed by museums here, notably the National Museum of Singapore. Since its re-opening in 2006, the museum has employed graphic design to package history in edgy visuals to attract the younger generation. Some of that energy and approach must have rubbed off  this batch of graduates.

Interestingly, many of the works also centered around Chinese culture. The use of ‘trendy’ designs and English as the language of choice suggest that these projects are created for an English-speaking audience. Again, we see design being used to bridge another Singapore disconnect — that of the English-speaking graduate class and their curiosity with their ethnic culture. Here, we can also see ‘who’ graphic designers are in Singapore — mostly Chinese.

While, the youth may take a liking to how heritage has been repackaged for them in these forms, it’ll be interesting to see this collection of projects put to the older generation as well. Will they be able to comprehend these ‘edgy’ designs? And will they think that such repackaging has “consumerise” their cultures — a sell-out, perhaps?

Everyone has said it before, but how time flies, especially when you’re done with FYP and spent the last few months traveling the world. In between this post and the last, we’ve set up for two exhibitions — the first for our lecturers to critique in school, the most recent for, well, the rest of the world to see. In other words, the ADM Grad Show.

fypme

Not the best of pictures, but it was taken by my good friends who deigned to make the perilous trudge up the never-ending stairs to the exhibition venue at Old School, Mount Sophia — which to me really sums up what this exhibition was about. Yes, there were potential bosses to impress; clients to meet; agencies to leave name cards with, but as I climbed those stairs with a different group of friends for the sixth time last week, I realised that this exhibition, to me, was really about showing my loved ones what I did and have been doing in uni these 4 years.

It felt good to finally let them see why I could hardly meet up with any of them for the past year or so, or why I always complain of being busy, tired and swamped with work. It felt good to show them that designers don’t just “draw some stuff” for their projects and hand them in. But most of all, it felt the best to just share with them the fruits of a hard year’s work — many of whom contributed to its success in varying degrees.

So with a new definition of FYP and a fresh graduate cert in hand, we are all off to whatever is next in life. But I’m grateful for the  ADM Grad Show 2010 because it not only left me with more toned calves, but great memories.

Animation Trailer Crowds

So I havent been updating my posts for quite some time due to the Animation Screening at the National Museum.

I had to say, since the batch of 2006 miraculously had a third of the student population in Animation, it was a tough
job being the Anim Rep, but it was worth it!

At the end of the day though the deadlines were tight and through countless of sleepless nights, we did manage to
pull of a kick arse performance and apparently impressed many of the audience.

Check it out! A whole article on our show… And I noticed that Yvonne’s been pretty much in the spotlight of all our
“ADM Representativeness” haha Animation Xpress

All said, at the end of the day, though many films were still a work in progress, the screening to us was a showcase
of the fruits of our labour. It was a day to share with everyone. The industry, our friends, seniors, profs and most
definitely our family.

Next up, the ADM FULL FYP exhibition launching at Sinema Old school , Mount sophia on the 23rd of july!
Eek more deadlines, more work and more screaming on the phone haha..

Will update on that in a bit. – but you can check out this site for information ADM GRAD Show

Ciaoz
